From the readers' perspective: In the news industry today, most media outlets are controlled or influenced by organizations with particular agendas and interests, who in turn shape the news and information before it's even broadcasted to the public. This may result in two things: either some important stories that are really socially valuable get buried and lost or never even covered, or the stories that get published are polished with biased point of views that end up draining their information value and adherence to the truth.
From the journalists' perspective: Traditional media outlets usually publish content from a small handful of people, plus their complicated editorial structure makes it hard for new voices to break in. In other words, if you’re not part of that privileged group, chances are you'll have to give your work away for almost nothing.
